MEETING SCHEDULE & LINKS



Thursday, June 20th 2013
 
7:00 – 9:00 PM
Check-in and social gathering at the Americinn upstairs conference rm. Field packets will be available for those arriving early.

 
Friday, June 21th 2013
 
8:30 – 9:00 AM
Welcome and announcements – Ginger Brown & Mike Thomas. Convene at the Americinn upstairs conference rm. to discuss meeting schedule, field sites and field trips. Pickup field packets with maps, collecting permits, checklists, and meeting info.
 
9:00 – 5:00 PM
Field outings in CT & RI (independently or as a group)
 
5:00 – 7:00 PM
Dinner at restaurant of your choice
 
7:30 PM
Meet in parking lot of Americinn for optional trip for Shadowdragons on CT River or a site in RI.
Field trips tentatively planned for Friday, June 21st (will depart as a group from the Americinn parking lot at 9:00 AM).
 

Connecticut – Trip Leader: Mike Thomas
 
Morning Trip: Haddam Meadows State Park; a walk along the Connecticut River in search of two elusive large river gomphids: Midland Clubtail (Gomphus fraternus) and Cobra Clubtail (G. vastus).
 
Afternoon Trip: Devil’s Hopyard State Park – Eight Mile River. Targets include Moustached Clubtail (Gomphus adelphus) & Maine Snaketail (Ophiogomphus mainensis).
 
Evening Trip - depart at 7:30 PM from the Americinn parking lot for Shadowdragons on the CT River at the Hadlyme Ferry dock (New London Co.). Estimated distance from the hotel is 30 miles (~40 min.)
 
Rhode Island– Trip Leaders: Ginger Brown
 
Morning Trip: Carbuncle Pond and Nicholas Farm Management Area, Coventry, RI. Targets include Little Bluet (Enallagma minusculum), Common Sanddragon (Progomphus obscurus).
 
Afternoon Trip: To Be Determined
Evening Trip: Beach Pond, Arcadia Management Area. Target: Shadowdragons.
 

Saturday, June 22nd 2013 8:00 – 8:30 AM
 
Convene at the Americinn upstairs conference rm. to discuss previous day’s results and today’s field trips.

RCN (Regional Conservation Needs) odonate workshop in upstairs conference rm. Project Leader: Erin White
 
Shadowdragon hunt for those not attending meeting (independent outing).
Field Trips tentatively planned for Saturday, June 22nd (will depart as a group from the Americinn parking lot at 9:00 AM).
 
Connecticut – Trip Leader: Mike Thomas
 
Morning Trip: Kayak/ Canoe trip on Middle Reservoir, Killingly (Windham Co.) - Connecticut’s best example of a coastal plain pond. Species previously recorded at site include Attenuated Bluet (Enallagma daeckii), New England Bluet (E. laterale), Little Bluet (E. minusculum), Scarlet Bluet (Enallagma pictum), Pine Barrens Bluet (E. recurvatum), Banded Pennant (Celithemis fasciata), and Martha's Pennant (C. martha). 42 species recorded from site.
 
Afternoon Trip: A search for gomphids along the Schetucket & Quinnebaug Rivers. Target species include Spine-crowned Clubtail (Gomphus abbreviatus), Moustached Clubtail (G. adelphus), Maine Snaketail (Ophiogomphus mainensis), and Rusty Snaketail (Stylurus rupinsulensis).
Depending on time: explore small forested streams and ponds in Pachaug State Forest (Voluntown).
 

Rhode Island– Trip Leaders: Ginger Brown
 
Morning Trip: Pine Top, Arcadia Management, West Greenwich, RI. Targets include Taper-tailed Darner (Gomphaeschna antilope), Coppery Emerald (Somatochlora georgiana), Delta-spotted Spiketail (Cordulegaster diastatops), Twin-spotted Spiketail (C. maculata), Arrowhead Spiketail (C. obliqua).
 
Afternoon Trip: Wood River, Arcadia Management Area, Exeter, RI. Targets include Brook Snaketail (Ophiogomphus aspersus), Maine Snaketail (O. mainensis), Spiketails (Genus Cordulegaster).
